Thistle Maiden

Thistle Maiden - This is a standing cloth doll in a black, white, lavender and shades of green with a thistle motif. Cotton fabric body, wool stuffing. Features created with acrylic paint, pigma pen, Prisma color pencils. Lips, eyebrows, lids, flair of nostrils hand stitched with Gutterman’s and Sulky thread. Highlight and shadow create depth. Blouse is made of a black and white grid cotton fabric. Apron front, cutwork and embroidered lavender and purple flowers on a black felt background. Periwinkle shade of tulle is under the skirt. Vintage hanky is wrapped around the waist. Hair is two colors of black and pale gray fine mohair yarn with silver metallic thread highlights sewn into a sculptural styling on the side of her face. Shoes are made with cotton fabric and a lace detail. She holds a wool blended felt black bird in her hand. The felt hat has embroidered purple and lavender flowers with a thistle on top and at the sides of the hat. She holds a small thistle pod and stands on a fabric base that coordinates with fabric in the apron.

Cat Tails is one of my favorite creations. I love a play on words and the possibilities they present. The skirt has three usages of the word Cat Tails......the cat has a tail.....cat tails grow in marshy areas.....and there is a cat reading a tale about a cat. The calico cat on the left is reading a pop up book called Puss in Boots. Visible and very obvious hand stitches are a common theme in my fabric figures. There is no mistaking the touch of the artists hand upon the art work. I also love to add a playful touch to my work. The gray and white kitty is trying to play with the dangling little fabric do-dad in the dolls hand.

Birds of a Feather

BBC America has a series called Planet Earth. In the second season...Planet Earth 2 there was a segment on Cities and how animals adapt to cities. One segment involved Bower Birds. These birds use whatever they come upon....bits of plastic...trash....anything flashy or shiny to make an inviting nest to attract the female. A particular set of birds found a red puffy heart that they put in their nest. When one bird wasn't watching, another would steal the heart for his nest. As I watched the segment I had a palm to forehead moment.....Oh My Goodness.....I am a Bower Bird. This doll is called Birds of a Feather. Each on of the birds in the skirt and the hat has something different in its beak. Something that will be used to create a very unique nest. Close up ...back view of Birds of a Feather.
